Abstract Tile Artist's Statement
For this piece, I designed a five inch by five inch slab tile with an abstract design. The design features more than five different types of coil and slab techniques, including loop coils and small, geometric slabs. The tile has a diagonal center piece with the other two corners of the tile featuring small clusters of clay coils and slabs. The entire tile has a small slab boarder running around the perimeter of the square tile base.
The coil was built using different coil and slab types. It focuses on different element of line and shape, as there are many different manipulations of lines throughout the tile, some forming identifiable geometric shapes. The lines are places to give the tile a sense of movement over the course of the work. No specific artist was used as inspiration for this tile, and as it is abstract, it is not meant to take any specific inspiration from tangible items.
This tile features an abstract design, so I did not feature any specific purpose in the design. I wanted the tile to have a sense of movement throughout it, despite it being a solid object. I also wanted to feature a combination of both organic and geometric shapes, because I think the combination of the two styles creates beautiful pieces of art. The tile was not designed with any specific function besides serving its purpose as a tile, however, seeing as there is only one copy of the tile, I will most likely use it as a coaster, decoration, or place mat.
I am really pleased with the final product of this ceramics assignment. I think the final product came out really beautifully and follows all of the project requirements. I was initially worried about making the design abstract, however, the design came out very cohesive and neat.
