Batik Installation Artist's Statement
For this project, I made three batik flags to be hung among others in downtown Ann Arbor. The first one pictures a pointe shoe, the second has the design of a sailboat, and the third features three different styles of ice cream cones. All of the flags are colorful and roughly the size of an average book.
We were given the direction to design the flags to represent sources of joy in our personal lives. The flag featuring a ballet shoe represents my love of dance and music. The second flag with the sailboat reminds me of the harbor near where I lived in California when I was young. The final flag pictures my favorite food, ice cream, which my friends and I go out to eat often during the summer. All of these things remind me of times when I have been very genuinely happy during my life.
The batik flags were not my favorite of all of the assignments we have completed in this class. I enjoyed drawing the templates on paper which were to be redrawn on fabric flags using glue. Transferring the glue onto the fabric during the initial stage of this assignment was somewhat frustrating because the glue did not allow for precise lines, and often ran over the fabric, distorting the intended image. It was difficult to add any sort of detail to the images. I do however think that all together, the flags will look nice hanging in out city, and the lack of detail will not be noticeable when they are hanging and blowing in the wind.
